  • Title: "The Role of National Culture and Market Openness in Gender Equality: Implications for Innovation in Developing Economies"
  • Abstract: Can increasing market openness reduce the negative impact of certain national cultures on gender equality? This study integrates two mainstreams of research to investigate the cultural effects of power distance and masculinity on gender equality, and whether digitalization and international trade, two crucial mechanisms and proxies of market openness, moderate those cultural effects. Using longitudinal data collected from over 100 developing countries, the results show that while the traditional cultures of power distance and masculinity reduce gender equality, digitalization and international trade play different roles in suppressing such negative influences. Equally interestingly, the authors unlock the positive impact of gender equality on innovation outcomes such that when gender equality increases, radical innovation increases while incremental innovation remains unchanged. Moreover, when the sample is separated into two groups based on a country’s income level (low- to lower-middle income vs. upper-middle to high income), findings reveal further novel insights – the roles of market openness mechanisms and national cultures, and influences of gender equality on innovations are not identical across the groups. Additional results and their implications for international business communities and policymakers are discussed towards the end.
